A door opens

Why do I write? And why poetry?

Good questions, important questions, and the simple answer? I don’t really know.

I’ve always liked to write. I guess the music of words always appealed to me. Poetry, however, came later. It was something I turned to after experiencing one of those mundane traumas in my life almost a decade ago now. I don’t really know where it came from. I can’t explain it. But when it did, it came like a flood.

I wrote often in those days. The words came pouring out, and I just kept writing. It was cathartic, it was magical, and I didn’t want to stanch the flow. But then I locked them away in a box, I’m not entirely sure why.

I suppose some of it was too personal. I suppose I wasn’t ready to share it with the world. Or I was ‘saving’ them, waiting for some perfect moment. But as the new year came around, I realized that the moment had come.

And so a door opens on this new chapter. I feel excited. And a little nervous. But I suppose that’s okay.

Thanks for visiting and stay tuned for a new poem for MLK day weekend.
